Schnauzer safety tips

I searched Google News this morning for the term ‘Schnauzer’ and came across an upsetting story from earlier this year, which involved a family losing their pet Schnauzer in a house fire. The Schnauzer’s owner had only popped out to drop his children off at school, but an electrical malfunction caused the family’s toaster to spark, initiating the fire.
Personally, I try to be very strict when I leave Archie at home, as his safety is something I’m paranoid about. I have several near-obsessive rituals that I go through before I’m happy to leave the house. So, naturally, I thought I’d share these – who knows, they may even help out in the future?
- Make sure you turn off all plug sockets: Check every socket you’ve used that day, from the bedroom to kitchen. Specifically check anywhere you’ve plugged in hot items like hair straighteners, computer cables, mobile phone chargers and ironing equipment.
- Get into a routine of checking cooking equipment is switched off: Before you leave the house, ensure the hob, oven and grill are all turned off. Even check the toaster! Make this a ritual, and check every time you leave the house!
- Keep your dog in one room: Shut your dog into one room, which you can ensure is safe, or ‘dog-proof’ before leaving the house. Remove anything that could be a hazard, including anything that looks good enough for your pet to chew.
What are your tips?
Do you have any dog-proofing rituals that you have to do before leaving your pet? Do you find yourself worrying about your pet on his own at home? Let us know in the comments below:
